Sri Lankan Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Sripathy Sooriyarachi Saturday around 3:00 p.m. in Colombo following his summon for investigation into alleged misuse of a government vehicle after his removal from the ministerial portfolio. The arrest comes after Mr. Sooriyarachi has exposed an alleged scandal by Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapakse, the brother of SL President, involving Rs.600 million in the purchase of Russian-made MIG fighter and weapons.
Sooryarachi before presenting to the CID around 9:15 am told media that the vehicle was handed over to the government under proper procedure. Mr. Sooriyarachi is expected to be produce at the Colombo District Court, legal sources said. He could be detained for minimum of 14 days. Previously, the Kaduwala Additional Magistrate Lakmal Wickramasooriya Friday granted permission to the CID to investigate and get a statement from Sripathy Sooryarachi, following the examination on a B report submitted. According to the report Sooryarachi has return his ministerial vehicle(GA3040-Jeep) on the 3rd of March. Assistant Sub Inspector of the CID D.Gajatheera submitting his statement to the court house said it is confirmed through evidence that the former minister has missed use the vehicle from his removal from the ministry to the day he handed over it therefore, requested the Magistrate to grant permition to get a statement.
