The fishermen of Pashaiyoor, Gurunagar, Kolumbuththurai and Navanthurai in the Jaffna municipal area protested against the ban on fishing imposed by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA). The SLA allowed fishermen to fish in shallow waters only up to 500 meters from the shore. SLA made the concessionary announcement after the representatives of the Goodwill Committee for Peace and Justice met the SLA commanders on Thursday and requested the lifting of total ban on fishing.
Fisheries union officials said that nearly 4,000 local fishermen rejected the offer saying that 500 meter in the shallow water sea is knee deep and does not contain enough fish stock worth fishing, and vowed to boycott until they are allowed to go fishing in boats. Sivakumar is a relative of the Jaffna University student who was shot dead in Varani recently. Youth went missing in Jaffna A youth went missing in Jaffna on 28th February. Atputham Ranjithkumar aged 24 went to Jaffna town and he was stopped for long hours by the SLA at Ariakulam junction then went missing. Civilian shot and killed in Chavakachcheri Rasenthiram Ilanchelvan aged 32 was shot and killed by the SLA and paramilitary in his house located near Old Police Station. When he went to the back side of his house around 6.00am he was shot. Two youths shot dead in Thiriyai Two youths, one Tamil and other a Muslim, were shot and killed by SLA and paramilitary at Ilupakadaivai in Thiriyai, a resettled Tamil village located about 40 km off north of Trincomalee town around 10 pm on 28 th February. The victims were identified as M.Vikram aged 26 and Mansil aged 24. Businessman shot dead in Ariyalai A businessman from Kanagaratnam Road in Ariyalai Jaffna inside the Jaffna Municipal boundary was shot dead by the SLA and the paramilitary at 10:30 p.m. on 2nd March. The SLA went to Mr Manikkam Manoharan's house in a motorbike, called the man to come outside the house, and shot him at point blank range before escaping. Manoharan was 44 years old and married. SLA mortar fire kills teenager in Batticaloa A fourteen year old boy succumbed to injuries caused by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) mortar fire launched towards Vantharumoolai west area from Mavadivembu SLA camp around 9:00 a.m on 1st March. The victim was identified as T. Nirojan, 14. Nirojan was first rushed to Chenkaldy hospital and later transferred to Batticaloa Teaching hospital for further treatment where he succumbed to his injuries.
