36 civilians were killed and 27 were disappeared in the first fortnight of January 2007 by Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse's war on Tamils to eradicate the minorities from the Island. Eight civilians in Batticaloa, five civilians in Trincomalee , two civilians in Mannar, eight civilians in Vavuniya and thirteen civilians in Jaffna were killed. A further 27 civilians were disappeared by the Sri Lankan operated forces in Tamil homeland. The trend of highest number of killing and disappearance of civilians in Jaffna continues in this fortnight as well. 22 civilians were disappeared including two high school students, Paranchothy Thanancheyan and Murukananthan Paramanathan. The January fortnight bar-graph shows clearly the humanitarian situation in the whole of Northeast, specifically in Jaffna. It is worth noting that, more than 40 civilians in Jaffna including ten under the age of 18 have sought protection with the human rights commission and they have been produced before the courts. Court decided to place them in prison for their own safety says the Jaffna branch of the human rights commission.
