Sri Lanka - Tamils current concerns and approaches - Views from Kandiah Neelakandan PDF Print E-mail
kandiahneelakandan.jpgMeeting Notes - 24TH OF MARCH 2010 AT THE RAMADA HOTEL IN COLOMBO
Kandiah Neelakandan started by saying that we should think carefully at this time, as to what we should do to rectify the situation. There is no point in shouting emotional slogans in the North & East, it does not help the Tamil people, and perhaps the benefit of that goes to President Rajapaksa.  Not many people are living in Jaffna and many in the camps are suffering. How many of the Tamils here have helped them. I know for sure that firms controlled by Sinhala businessmen have helped in these initiatives.

Every Tamil with connections should use their good offices for the betterment of the Tamil people not for your personal gains. He listed out the various instances where redresses were obtained by working together with the government. The examples varied from providing education facilities to former militants at Ratmalana Hindu College, Renovating access facilities to Thiruketheeswaram temple, agreement to open an engineering faculty in Jaffna etc.  He paid compliments to the Governor of the Northern Province for the excellent work done. He pointed out that working with the government does not necessarily mean that we should be submissive to every situation.

He says we should all look forward to an environment where we could speak out when ever necessary and where ever possible we should participate in governance. He spelt out many instances in his life where he stood up for what is right and he was happy that his stand was vindicated at times even at personal peril to him. He felt that good points which were incorporated in the Vaddukodai resolution and Oslo agreement should not be dropped whole sale but could be brought to the notice of the President in an appropriate manner. He also mentioned that we should avoid the segregation of Tamils as Northern, Eastern, Colombo and Up country Tamils but we should be known as Sri Lankan Tamils.
