KP severely tortured by Sri Lanka intelligence; Hunt for Rudrakumaran continues PDF Print E-mail
"According to a reliable Defence Ministry source LTTE’s former International head Selvarasa Pathmanathan, well known as KP is said to have undergone severe torturing in the hands of the intelligence operatives to extract information from him," said Sri Lanka Guardian today. The Sri Lanka Guardian quoted the defence ministry source and said that KP is held in the Panagoda army camp in the outskirts of Colombo. According to the defence investigator of the Sri Lanka Gurdian, KP was uncooperative and was severely tortured by the Sri Lanka Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) for maintaining silence. At one point, KP has fainted and breathless and the army paramedics had to be called in to revive him.

Sri Lanka Guardian news report further said:

The source in the Defence Ministry reflected annoyance that TID officials are exerting excessive violence on KP. Since the medical treatment, KP is said to be facing subtle touring like slapping, arm twisting, ear pulling and finger knuckling in the process of their investigations.

The Defence Ministry source further confirmed that Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse’s publicised meeting with KP only lasted for few minutes, as KP was maintaining determined silence in the meeting. Gotabaya had left the place after making abusive comment in Sinhala language.

It is suspected Sri Lanka is preventing access to Indian Intelligence sleuths to interview KP, fearing that he will take the opportunity to reveal the treatment meted out to him by the TID men. According to news reports, Indian officials are keen to interview KP to find out further about the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by the LTTE. Instead, Sri Lanka has gone out of the way to get the Pakistani intelligence to implicate him in the Karachi terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team.

KP was abducted at the Tune Hotel in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in early July 2009 by the Malaysian intelligence on a tip off and handed over to the TID in Colombo.

According to sources close to KP, he is suffering from acute diabetic condition and heart disorder. He is not provided legal assistance or access to the relevant UN agencies and the government is said to be heavily relying on its anti-terrorism law to investigate and hold him without due process.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan governmment's next target is Viswanathan Rudrakumaran, who is an American citizen. The Govt. is of the view that he can be arrested in the same way as was KP arrested in Malaysia.

The Sri Lankan Government has been asking America to extradite Rudrakumaran even before the arrest of KP, sources in Colombo said. It said that after the Government became aware that Rudrakumaran along with the Tamil Diaspora representatives met Robert Blake, the government lodged its protests against it.

The American Government. took the position that if charges against Rudrakumaran that he helped terrorists can be substantiated, it will take measures to institute legal action.  From that point of time , the Sri Lankan  Govt.’s challenge was to search for leads to prove that he had in fact assisted in terrorist activities. Government is trying to collect evidence from KP to inflict charges against Rudrakumaran for supporting terrorist activities.
