AFTA Welcomes Tamil National Alliance’s Political Stand PDF Print E-mail

aftalog.pngThe Australasian Federation of Tamil Associations (AFTA), the umbrella body representing the peak Tamil Associations in Australia and New Zealand welcomes the political stand taken by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the only democratically elected parliamentary party representing the legitimate aspirations of the Tamil people in north-east Sri Lanka.

In the aftermath of the end of the armed conflict and facing democratic elections for two local councils during this weekend in the north, TNA has declared that a political solution for the Eelam Tamils should be based on their right to self-determination, acknowledging their historical homeland in the north-east of the island.  “A political formula to resolve the ethnic question of Eelam Tamils is currently being drafted by the TNA and it will be presented soon to Colombo, New Delhi and to the International community”, said the TNA parliamentary group leader Mr. R. Sampanthan at a media conference in Jaffna city in the north during his election campaign trail.

AFTA is encouraged by this principled stand taken by the TNA in the midst of death threats being issued to their candidates contesting these local council elections by the Tamil paramilitary groups contesting under the government lead coalition.  AFTA is confident that the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam that has been proposed by the LTTE leadership involving the Diaspora will work closely with TNA to strengthen their hands in achieving self-determination for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.

AFTA encourages the Tamil voters in the north of the country to rally behind TNA.

AFTA appeals to all the democratic nations including Australia and New Zealand to engage with the TNA leadership in Sri Lanka and to use their influence with the Sri Lankan government to facilitate negotiations between the parties to the conflict, to find a political solution that allows the Tamils in the island to decide their own political, social and economical destiny and to live in security and with peace and dignity.

AFTA appeals to the international media also to engage with the TNA leadership and help them to get the support of the international community to their noble effort.  AFTA will be only too happy to assist any media in making contacts with the TNA leadership if needed.
