| Seminar in Sydney - Impunity and Immunity? Prosecuting Heads of State for War Crimes |

"..The seminar will be held at the Assembly Hall, Faculty of Law, University of Sydney, 173 - 175 Phillip Street, Sydney on Tuesday 4 August 2009 commencing with light refreshments at 6pm for 6:15pm. .." Sydney University Law students and Public are invited to attend the annual Australian Red Cross and Mallesons Stephen Jaques Humanitarian Law Perspectives seminar. The seminar, "Impunity and Immunity? Prosecuting Heads of State", will consider the unique challenges and opportunities presented when prosecuting and defending Heads of States for crimes under international humanitarian and international criminal law. The issue will be debated by a panel of prominent speakers and will be moderated by Professor Gillian Triggs, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Sydney University. Graham Blewitt will discuss the challenges and opportunities from a prosecution perspective. Mr Blewitt has been the Deputy Chief Prosecutor at the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague, and was involved in the prosecution of Slobodan Milosevic. Mark Ierace SC will outline the key challenges and issues for the defence. Mr Ierace is the Senior Public Defender at the NSW Public Defender's Office. He was a Senior Trial Attorney at the ICTY, and is a visiting fellow in International Criminal Law at UNSW. Associate Prof Steven Freeland will consider the road ahead for the International Criminal Court. Mr Freeland is Associate Professor in International Law at the University of Western Sydney, and Visiting Professional at the International Criminal Court. Closing comments, offering a humanitarian perspective, will be given by Jeremy England, Head of the International Committee of Red Cross Office in Australia.
