There are growing concerns about the safety of civilians in Gaza and southern Israel, particularly the 1.5 million Palestinians trapped in the Gaza Strip amid continuing Israeli attacks.Nearly 700 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air strikes and other attacks since 27 December. While many Israeli attacks have targeted Palestinian combatants, other attacks have been disproportionate, recklessly endangering civilians and causing civilian casualties. In the same period, five Israelis have been killed, including three civilians killed in rocket attacks launched by Palestinian armed groups.
The last two weeks of fighting have increased the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, in force continuously since June 2007. Send an urgent appeal - using the form on the right - to Stephen Smith calling on the UN Security Council to take decisive action to address the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel. Background Gaza has suffered from a long-term pattern of economic stagnation and plummeting development indicators. The severity of the situation has increased exponentially since Israel imposed extreme restrictions on the movement of goods and people in response to the Hamas take over of Gaza and to indiscriminate rocket attacks against Israel. |
