| | Prominent Sinhala extremist and a long time 'image polisher' of the Rajapaksa brothers, Walter Jayawardhana has been given the posting of Counsellor of Information at the Sri Lankan embassy in London. Positions at the London embassy are most revered by Sri Lankans, according to sources in Colombo. "These positions offer world class education for the children and a prospect of eternal foreign citizenship," according to one source. The Sri Lankan tax payers foot the bills of officials in the Foreign Service. Walter Jayawardhana's annual burden on the Sri Lankan tax payers is expected to be about SLR 16million. |
"Who can blame Walter?" asked a junior government official here. "Even two of the four Rajapaksa brothers who run this country hold U.S. citizenships," he added. Several prominent government figures hold foreign citizenships. Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohana is a neutralised Australian national. Walter was the founder of Sinhala Defense League (SDF), a Sinhala extremist organisation that promotes the genocide of Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka.

According to Dr Jayadevan, a popular Tamil politician in London, the new appointment is only to serve the purpose of polishing the Rajapaksa brothers' image in the UK. Sri Lanka's last President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, is a long time London resident. All her children are neutralised British citizens, and have been residing there for more than two decades. Two of the three children of the current President are also resident in Britain. |
