Defy ban on KW Street marches: Greens PDF Print E-mail
Greens MLC Mark Parnell has called on organisers of future marches and street protests to walk down King William Street, following the revelation that an agreement was made between officers of the Adelaide City Council, SAPol and the Public Transport Division that King William Street could not longer be utilised for marches, parades or rallies."Faceless bureaucrats are claiming the right to decide where ordinary citizens can and cannot march - that is simply appalling," said Mark Parnell.

"The ability to march down the cultural and economic heart of the City of Adelaide is a democratic right that must be maintained.

"Yes, there is some disruption to traffic and the trams, but that is the whole point.  Otherwise protesters might as well just do three laps of Victoria Park.

"The Greens recommend that protest organisers always consult with Police and the Adelaide City Council, but at the end of the day people have a right to march and protest where they think they will have the biggest impact.

"I strongly urge the organisers of the next street march to insist on their democratic right to claim King William Street as the public boulevard it is," he said.
