ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey said today that the evidence that the Murrumbidgee River is in dire straits is not news but indicates the increasing urgency for action."The Murrumbidgee is the one part of the Murray-Darling system where the ACT has a direct role in management," said Dr Foskey today."The Coorong is dying because there's not enough water flowing through the Murray, so much is used for agriculture and towns along the way, and the existing flow is constrained by human use and misuse."
"However we manage our water resources here on the upper Murrumbidgee, it's got to deliver downstream." "The ACT is in a privileged position in regard to water, and it is an historical and political anomaly that has given us control. The ACT Greens have long argued for a Catchment Authority for the Upper Murrumbidgee that will govern water management in the ACT and surrounding NSW." "And so I support those people in NSW arguing for a regional approach to water management, but remind them it implies a regional approach to development as well." "The Greens have some real concerns about proposed development around the Googong Dam for example, which is an area in need of rehabilitation rather than increased use. " "We need to take seriously our place in the Murray Darling catchment. |
