Tamil Youth Organisation New Zealand (TYONZ) would like to express its heartfelt condolences to the family of Marusalin Sandananayagy Pathmanathan of Auckland, who lost close relatives in yesterday’s claymore attack on school children.
Mrs Pathmanathan, known as Indra to the Tamil community, lost her nephew Rohan Xavier, aged 10, in a daytime attack on a school bus filled with children returning from a sports day. Her niece, Mathusa Xavier, aged 15, was severely injured in the attack. The attack occurred at 2:25PM on Tuesday at Madu. At the time of writing, 20 people lost their lives due to the attack with another 14 are critically injured. Of the dead, 11 were children. Other casualties included the bus driver, a teacher and hospital employees. All of the children on board were Internally Displaced People (IDP) and were attending Thadcha'naamaruthamadu Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School, The bus was attacked a mere 1km from the Madu Church by the Deep Penetration Unit of the Sri Lankan Army using a claymore mine. Rev. Fr. Emilianus Pillai, from Madu Church said following the blast, the Sri Lankan Army went on to fire artillery shells aimed at the destroyed bus. This deterred the efforts of the civilians trying to help victims of the initial blast. TYONZ is shocked by this news and condemns the attack on school children. The placing of the claymore a mere kilometre from a church shows the lengths the Sri Lankan Army is willing to go to, to harm the Tamil population. We call upon the international community to condemn these attacks and to help save the lives of other Tamil children who are in danger of being victims. Once again we would like to extend our condolences to Indra and her family, who are active members of the Tamil community in Auckland. Our thoughts and prayers with all those affected in this latest attack by the Sri Lankan Army on the Tamil people.
