Jaffna - The Head of Sri Lanka Red Cross (SLRC) of Point Pedro, Mr. Sooriyakaanthi Thavarasa’s lifeless body was found in the road side.He was a father of five children and he had been receiving death threats from  paramilitary group and forced to go into hiding due the intent of threats and fear from these groups and complained made to the Jaffna Human Rights Commission (JHRC), according to his relatives.

His tortured lifeless body was dumped in a road side in the Kaithady area in Jaffna. Two Sri Lankan Red Cross Tamil volunteers were abducted by the Sri Lankan police in the capital Colombo, found murdered and their bodies were dumped in the street in Ratnapura district last June.

He was named "best volunteer" in 2005 by the Sri Lanka Red Cross society for his work in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.

"We are shocked by another senseless and brutal murder of one of our volunteers," Jagath Abeysinghe, president of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, said in a statement. He called on authorities to immediately investigate the killing.

Enforced abductions, disappearances and killings of thousands of Tamil men, women, students, scholars, intellectuals, professionals, humanitarian workers, academics, journalists, and religious leaders are continuing unabated even though wider international community repeatedly voiced it concerns on the seriously worsening human rights violations in Sri Lanka. This is the horrible reality the section of citizens of Sri Lanka facing in Sri Lanka, a rights activist said in Jaffna.

Sri Lanka has been pronounced by media rights activists and rights groups as the most dangerous place in the world for journalists and aid workers to work.

The civil war in Sri Lanka has so far claimed at least 80,000 people while half a million Tamil people are internally displaced and over a million people are externally displaced.  At least 5,800 people have been killed in the last two years alone, a rights group said.
