Around 25 Tamil journalists have fled Sri Lanka over the past three years, the Free Media Movement (FMM) claimed yesterday. FMM Convener Sunanda Deshapriya told The Nation that the journalists had fled the country as their lives were in danger. The Nation learns that one of the most recent reporters to flee the country was Thinakkural Defence Correspondent K. P. Mohan, who was subjected to severe harassment by security forces on several occasions.
This was apart from an unidentified gang throwing acid on his face. “We have never experienced such an exodus of reporters. This is the first time that Sri Lanka is experiencing such a situation,” he said.He also disclosed that many journalists in Jaffna and Batticaloa have given up writing due to the threats posed on them in the forms of murder and abductions from unidentified groups, including paramilitaries. Deshapriya charged that the killing of three Voice of Tigers (VOT) journalists and the blocking of the TamilNet website was an illegal act by the government. “All journalists, working for whatever organisation, are considered civilians as they are unarmed,” he added. |
