Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama to seek release of War Criminal Col Karuna PDF Print E-mail
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama would be leaving for the UK to hold discussions and meetings on issues of bilateral importance with his counterpart and other political dignitaries, a press release issued by the ministry said yesterday. It is also expected that Rohitha will request for the release of Sri Lankan Paramilitary Operative, War Criminal Col Karuna alias Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan recently arrested & sentenced by UK police and immigration authorities, sources said. Col Karuna was arrested following a joint operation between Britain's new Border and Immigration Agency and London police, a UK Home Office statement previously said.

ahrv.jpgThe United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva today passed a resolution calling on States to not resort to racial, ethnic or religious profiling while countering terrorism. Adopted without a vote, the text urges States to fully comply with their obligations regarding torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. It also "opposes any form of deprivation of liberty that amounts to placing a detained person outside of the protection of the law." Additionally, the 47-member body adopted five other resolutions.

The leader of Viduthalai Chi'ruththaika'l Kadchi (VCK, Liberation Panthers Party), Thol. Thirumavalavan called upon the Indian Government to close down the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Tamil Nadu, while addressing a demonstration held in Chennai on Thursday by Tamil Protection Movement, attended by a large gathering. He blamed the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai of indulging in "vituperative disinformation campaign" against the Tamil people struggling for their human rights. By publishing books and releasing statements against the Tamils, the Deputy High Commission was trying to malign the Tamil liberation struggle. Therefore, he demanded that the present consulate should be shut down and Sri Lanka should not be allowed to have an office in any corner of Tamil Nadu.

Politicians and film personalities from Tamil Nadu have taken strong exception to a Sinhalese film that seeks to "vulgarize the Tamil liberation struggle in Sri Lanka." Tamil Nadu Film Producers' Association President Rama. Narayanan condemned the film for disgracing the Tamil people at the end of a special screening. Tamil Protection Movement President Thol. Thirumavalavan vowed to take legal action to prevent the film's release in Tamil Nadu since he felt that it not only degraded the Eelam liberation struggle and hurt Tamil sentiments but it was also capable of disrupting communal harmony in Sri Lanka.
