By Niko Leka, Green Left Weekly issue | 16 January 2010
Indonesia plans to force the 240 Tamil refugees, moored on a boat in Merak, into detention at the end of this week, “at gunpoint if necessary”, the January 14 Australian reported. The refugees have refused to leave the boat, which has been at Merak since October, when Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to ask that Indonesian authorities “intercept” the boat carrying 254 travelling to Australia. With good reason, the refugees fear being jailed in Indonesia for up to 10 years, or being deported back to Sri Lanka.

Australia Day 2010 - Celebrating Australia: A History of Australia Day essay PDF Print E-mail

Celebrating Australia: A History of Australia Day essay
Written by Dr Elizabeth Kwan
The tradition of having Australia Day as a national holiday on 26 January is a recent one. Not until 1935 did all the Australian states and territories use that name to mark that date. Not until 1994 did they begin to celebrate Australia Day consistently as a public holiday on that date1.
What drew Australians together in this way? Did Australia Day become a day for all Australians to enjoy?

What role the Sri Lankan government has played in Refugee Security Assessment by ASIO ? PDF Print E-mail

rohangunaratna.jpg"...Given the Parkin case, it seems pertinent to wonder what role the Sri Lankan government has played in the current assessment. After all, it’s already been alleged that Sri Lankan officials have been allowed to question Tamils in Indonesia. That would be, mind you, representatives of the same Sri Lankan government leading an army caught on camera systematically shooting prisoners, a government with one of the worst human rights records in the world, and a documented tendency to regard all Tamils as terrorists; indeed, the same government whose persecution has led to the Tamils being officially declared refugees. It is, of course, possible that the five individuals — even the little kids — are, in fact, exceedingly dangerous people. But in that case, why not make the information available so that the public can make up its own mind?..."

ASIO's assessments can destroy lives of three men, one woman and her two childre - Pamela Curr PDF Print E-mail
Four asylum seekers from the Oceanic Viking face more uncertainty after an adverse assessment from ASIO, which cannot be examined. The finding that four people from the Oceanic Viking have received an adverse security assessment from ASIO may gird the loins of the anti-asylum seeker sector in Australia. However, in the absence of ASIO providing reasons as to why they have made such assessments, it is worth looking at previous decisions in similar circumstances. The consequences of these decisions are so serious and so deleterious to the individuals involved that a clear-eyed review of the efficacy of past ASIO indictments is called for in the interests of justice.
