A three-wheeler fitted with a bomb rammed into a bus carrying riot control police commandos, few hundred meters away from the Sri Lankan Presidential Secretariat, Friday noon, killing at least 9 persons, 7 policemen and 2 civilians, and injuring more than 50 policemen and 35 civilians. The explosion has taken place on Lotus Road inside the High Security area near the Hilton Hotel. 12 wounded policemen were in critical condition, according to medical sources in Colombo hospital. |

An intelligence official from the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India's external intelligence agency, posted at the embassy in Beijing is being recalled for his alleged links with a Chinese language teacher.Manmohan Sharma, who was posted in Beijing a year back, will be returning to headquarters shortly. This creates a perception that these terms are similar and is a matter of semantics. A lobby is “a group of persons who attempt to influence legislators or other public officials on behalf of some particular cause or interest” and lobbying means “to influence (legislators), or urge or procure the passage of” (Reference Macquarie dictionary.) The keyword in defining lobbyists and lobbying is influence”, which is defined as “power of producing effects by invisible or insensible means”. |

Tamil Youth Organisation of Australia wishes to bring to your attention the murder of a Tamil Catholic priest, Father M X Karunaratnam. "A roadside bomb in Sri Lanka said to have been planted by government soldiers in rebel territory killed Father M X Karunaratnam, a Catholic priest and campaigner for the rights of Tamils." [AP, 21/04/08] On Sunday 20 April 2008, the Deep Penetrating Unit of the Sri Lankan Army targeted Father M X Karunaratnam, head of North East Secretariat on Human Rights, whilst he returned from a church service. He now joins the list of several Tamil parliamentarians, journalists and human rights activists assassinated by the Sri Lankan Government. |

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) units that attempted to break the Forward Defence Line of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) in Ki'laali, Mukamaalai and on several other positions were forced to retreat, leaving behind dead bodies of their troopers, according to LTTE's Northern Forces Operations Command. Heavy fighting lasted till 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The SLA has suffered heavy casualties as the Tigers put up stiff resistance, says TamilNet. |
