The Australasian Federation of Tamil Associations (AFTA) notes with regret that the innocent civilians are being targeted in the recent weeks in all parts of the island of Sri Lanka.During the Norwegian facilitated cease-fire such attacks on innocent civilians were nonexistent. However, since President Rajapakse unilaterally abrogated the cease-fire agreement in January 2008 the country has plunged into senseless violence again. Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been accusing the government of deploying what have come to be known as "deep penetration units" to target vehicles in the Tamil held territory resulting in Tamil civilian casualties. Indiscriminate aerial bombardment and artillery shelling of residential areas in the Tamil held areas have also escalated resulting in civilian deaths and property damage. |

He said in 2008, "Journalists should not be allowed to write about military matters and strong action should be taken against those who do." He was increasingly aggressive to journalists who refused to bow to his orders during 2007, specialising in making threats over the telephone. He phoned the editor of the Daily Mirror, threatening to get her sacked and to "wipe out" one of her colleagues if they did not stop publishing articles about the plight of civilians caught up in the war. |

The Jaffna Public Library began as the private collection of the scholar K.M. Chellapha, who began lending books from his home in 1933. In 1934, a committee set up a formal library, with Chellapha as secretary. Initially, 844 books, 30 newspapers and periodicals were kept in a single room, but soon the collection was shifted into a building on Jaffna’s main street and was opened to subscribers. The library was so popular that a cross-section of prominent members of the community began raising funds to build a permanent, modern building to house the library. The architect of the Indo-Saracenic style building was Mr. Narasimhan from Madras, India, and well-known Indian librarian S.R. Ranganathan served as an advisor to ensure that the library was built to international standards. In due course the first major wing of the library was opened in 1959 by then Jaffna mayor Alfred Duraiappah. |

US Citizen and Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who is officially tasked to ensure the security of all Sri Lankans, had indirectly levelled death threats on two senior journalists last Monday. The people of this country had great respect for Secretary Rajapaksa for his effort to crackdown on the LTTE and were aghast when he faced an LTTE suicide attack at the Pithala junction Colombo sometime ago. But people will not by any stretch endorse his attempt to silence the fourth estate of this country in a bid to prevent people learning about corruption, misuse and abuse of power by this Government. |
