Mervyn Silva, the Sri Lankan Minister of Labour and a thug leader in the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapkasa's government, was held captive by media workers Thursday. He was surrounded when he reportedly went amok against a news editor, P.M.D Chandrasekara, of the state owned Rupawahini cooperation, for "failing to broadcast" a video footage of his appearance in a meeting in Matara on Wednesday. Mr. Mervyn Silva, beaten by the media workers, was later freed by the Police security out of the Rupawahini premises located in the high security Bauddhaloka Mawatha after a mediation attempt by non-cabinet minister of media, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, failed, media sources in Colombo said. |

Today is the third anniversary of the tsunami that tragically devastated many countries in the world including Tamil Eelam. The national dailies and other media in Tamil Eelam are filled with pictures, songs and memories of the loved ones taken away by the tsunami. Events are being held in many parts of Tamil Eelam to mark the day. President Rajapakse, like Adolf Hitler believing his own propaganda, believes his own lies. He believes the lie that there are numerous Tamil rebels killed on a daily basis. These killed are not rebels but innocent farmers, fishers, women and children going about their work. The Tigers said to be killed do not go about wearing stripes. He believes that the Tamil speaking people in the east have been liberated. He believes that the Tamils in the north are waiting for him, to be liberated. He believes that power will be devolved on the Tamil speaking people. |

For over two decades, there has been savage conflict in Sri Lanka between a minority group of Tamils who claim traditional rights for land in the north-east and the majority, Sinhalese, government in Colombo. It could be argued that the only rule of warfare is the respect each side has for the capacity of the other to terrorise: the desire for self-preservation has tended to restrict the number of civilians being bombed. |
