Over 700 Melbourne Tamils, intellectuals and community leaders gathered at Holy family Hall, Mt Waverley on Sunday(17/12/06) 5.30pm, to remember the life of the late Dr.Anton Balasingham, theoretician and chief negotiator of the LTTE, who passed away last Thursday. Mrs. Betty Wilby, mother of Mrs. Adele Balasingham, inaugurated the meeting by lighting the candle, and Nithy Kanagaratnam, well known songwriter and singer led the tributes with his newly composed song “Closer walk with thee …” |

Tamil Guardian Sri Lanka’s military continued its assault against the LTTE-held Vaharai region over the weekend, killing scores of Tamil civilians with air and artillery strikes. The United Nations and international ceasefire monitors protested the targeting of civilians. Ever since tens of thousands of Tamils who fled earlier Sri Lankan military offensives in Trincomalee arrived in Vaharai, in northern Batticaloa, the government has cut off supplies of food and medicine to the impoverished region, creating a humanitarian crisis. |

Sri Lanka claims to be a democracy and the Sri Lankan Constitution says that the country ‘shall be known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka’. The claim is ludicrous in light of events in the island. Ordinary people in Sri Lanka at the heart of events, experience the wrecking of democratic principles and democratic institutions every day. The Sri Lankan government continues to violate every democratic principle and shows little regard for democratic institutions. Some of these institutions have been forced to become subservient to the politicians. In an obituary Friday, The Times of London described Mr. Anton Balasingham, the husband of Australian Freedong Fight (Sri Lanka ) Activist Adel (Melbourne) who passed away Thursday, as “the one man the Tigers could trust with their destiny in what looked like being a breakthrough in talks.” At one stage in the Norwegian peace process, the British broadsheet noted, Mr. Balasingham had steered the Tigers away from their demand for independence. However, it said, “everybody underestimated the determination of hardcore Sinhalese organisations like the JVP and hardline Buddhist clergy to scuttle any deal that gave the Tamils even a hint of autonomy.” The full text of the obituary follows:

S. Raveendranath, the Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University of Sri Lanka (EUSL), who was forced to resign his post recently following threats from paramilitary Karuna Group that abducted a Deen of the EUSL demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, was reported missing since 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dehiwale Police in Colombo said. The VC was reported missing in High Security area in the Bauddhaloka mawatta.

Pirapaharan in his condolence message following the demise of Anton Balasigham Thursday said that a "source of unwavering strength in the political and diplomatic efforts of our freedom movement, and the light of our nation is extinguished," and conferred the title "Voice of the Nation." LTTE leader, in his messasge further said: "Bala Annai has a permanent historic place in the growth and the spread of our movement. He was its elder member, its ideologue, its philosopher and, above all, my best friend who gave me encouragement and energy. He shared my sorrows, my anxieties and my travails." |

Anton Balasingham, theoretician and political advisor of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), has passed away in London Thursday. Mr. Balasingham has been associated with the Tamil liberation struggle for more than 30 years and participated as chief negotiator on behalf of the Liberation Tigers in almost all political negotiations, beginning with the Thimpu talks in 1985. He was diagnosed with bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), a rare and aggressive malignancy of the biliary system, in the middle of November. |

Jaffna Tamil Daily Uthayan 2nd nominee amoung 2006 Reporters Without Boarders Media Award - Novaya Gazeta won Top Award. "..At least five staff on the paper were killed in 2006, two of them murdered in a raid on its premises on the eve of World Press Freedom Day. In September, the printers of the Colombo edition was torched by unidentified attackers, while in Jaffna armed men have twice forced staff to print their press releases.
