Strike Force Panima has been established to investigate two incidents that occurred in Sydney's west yesterday.About 6.30pm a cash-in-transit van was parked outside a bank in George Street, Parramatta. Two of the guards have entered the bank and were approached and threatened by two men, both carrying firearms and wearing dark clothing with hoods and beanies. It is alleged one of the guards shot at the men who then ran from the premises. As the two armed men ran from the bank it is alleged a third guard waiting outside the premises has also fired his weapon. |

Positions at the London embassy are most revered by Sri Lankans, according to sources in Colombo. The Rudd Government will undertake a transparent, merit-based selection process to recruit five senior members for the independent refugee and migration review tribunals instead of just re-appointing existing members. The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, said advertisements had been placed for suitably qualified people to hold full-time senior member positions on the Refugee Review Tribunal (RRT) and Migration Review Tribunal (MRT). |

More than 13 000 people who have fled war, persecution or political strife in their troubled homelands began new lives in Australia last year, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, said today.The 13 014 humanitarian visas granted in 2007-08 shows our commitment to helping some of the world’s most needy people rebuild their lives in Australia,’ Senator Evans said. Search warrants were conducted by the AFP’s Child Protection Operations Team (CPOT) at his workplace on 30 July 2008. The long awaited showing of ‘My Daughter: The Terrorist’ took place on Monday 11th August to a fully sold out mixed audience at the ‘The Frontline Club’, a media club promoting independent journalism. Following the controversy courted by the film, not least for the Sri Lankan Government’s attempts to block showings globally at numerous film festivals in addition to the reported death threats against the producers, the crowd was in an expectant mood. The film itself was directed by Norwegian Beate Arnestad during the period of the ceasefire between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government. |

Family and friends of our members have been informed of several incidents where Tamil civilian targets have been attacked by shelling. On Friday 8 August, the Sri Lankan Government Forces targeted Mullaitivu District Hospital. The shelling killed an 18-month infant and injured 16 others. |

Thousands of families who fled the recent fighting between Sri Lankan forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) must be allowed to move to safer areas and to receive necessary humanitarian assistance, Amnesty International said today. "These people are running out of places to go and basic necessities," said Yolanda Foster, Amnesty International's Sri Lanka researcher. "The Tigers are keeping them in harm's way and the government is not doing enough to ensure they receive essential assistance." |
