Shanmugam Varatharasan, a well known Tamil writer and a literary award winner, known as 'Varathar,' passed away Thursday at the age of 82, at his residence on Manipay road in Jaffna. Varathar, besides being a creative writer, was a successful publisher of Tamil literary works of many Tamil writers, accommodating fresh and alternative ideas in Tamil creative writing. He was born on 01.07.1928 and lived his entire life in Jaffna. He is survived by three daughters.

Five Sri Lankan MPs who support the Tamil Tigers arrived here Thursday with a view to meet Indian leaders in a development that one of their most strident supporters said marked an 'important' policy change for New Delhi.The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs are expected to call on an array of political leaders here, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, said P. Abducted VC's mother appeals for son's release Mrs. Saraswathy Sivasubramaniam, 75, the mother of abducted Vice Chancellor of Eastern University appealed to the abductors to release his son without harm when TamilNet talked to her and her extended family in South London Thursday. "For the last 28 years my son and his family have been living in Batticaloa, the foremost thing in his mind was the development of Batticaloa, especially modernizing the agriculture in Batticaloa," she said. A team of five Sri Lankan Tamil MPs met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here on Wednesday and briefed him about the humanitarian crisis in Tamil-dominated areas of the island nation. They told him that the prices of essential commodities were rising on a daily basis and all civilians were suffering because of the war. Medicines were not available in the north. They urged Mr. Karunanidhi to take a proactive stance to stop the killing of civilians. They also urged him to take steps to ensure the opening of A-9 highway on a permanent basis. |

Sri Lanka's visitor arrivals in November slumped to 22.4 percent, the Tourist Board said Wednesday, prompting fears that the dwindling numbers will spillover to 2007. he island greeted 37,591 holidaymakers in November over 48,457 tourists in 2005, however, cumulative arrivals from Jan-Nov were up 4.5 percent to 520,378, the board said. The recent Sri lankan government military approach towards solving tamil ethnic issue is the cause for this sharp drop, tour operators says. Many western countries including Australia has black listed Sri Lanka asa tourist destination and alerts it citizens to 'Consider Travel' or 'Not Recommended' . |

It was an unprecedented protest which cut across ethnic, religious, political, and social boundaries. There were even international protests, interestingly by non-Sri Lankans. It followed the assassination in Colombo of the young Tamil politician, Nadarajah Raviraj (44), Member of Parliament for Jaffna in the Tamil North.
