United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today spoke out against escalating violations of the 2002 ceasefire between the Sri Lankan Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and called for them to return to the negotiating table.A spokesperson for Mr. Ban said he is “disturbed” by the intensifying violence, which include an air attack by the LTTE. |

The foreign affairs department is warning Australians of the danger of travelling to Sri Lanka after Tamil rebels forced the closure of the island's main international airport.The decades long civil conflict escalated overnight when Tamil forces attacked the Sri Lankan Air Force base at Bandaranaike, the attack led to the closure of the adjacent commercial airport. A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advisory issued on Monday morning said flights may be diverted to The Maldives and India. |
