Amnesty International (AI) has launched a worldwide public campaign calling for international human rights monitoring mechanism to be immediately established in Sri Lanka, AI said in an email to the Daily Mirror. Amnesty International believes nothing could be more effective in reducing the incidents of human rights abuses other than a genuine commitment by the security forces and the LTTE to respect human rights. |

By Katelyn John A 3M-high wall of water slammed into the Solomon Islands town of Gizo, causing widespread damage, according to an Australian woman living there. Aftershocks following a massive earthquake near the Solomons had made residents too frightened to return, said Kerrie Kennedy. Ms Kennedy is in Sydney visiting family but said her new house in Gizo was first rocked by the earthquake and than swamped by a tsunami. |

A prolonged darkness has set in our lives with the untimely passing away of our good friend and stalwart, Mr. Thillainadarajah Jeyakumar. The ever smiling face, total composure even in adversity and the tireless work ethics have gone for ever. This loss is unimaginable to the people of Thamil Eelam and this can never be replaced. The saying ‘no one is irreplaceable’ seemed a sensible view until now but not anymore. There are some things in life once lost can never be replaced and the passing of Jeyakumar is such a loss to our community at large. |

This however is not what is really significant about the event; far from it.
