Forgotten Tamil Asylum Seekers in Nauru – Time for Tamil Lawyers in Australia to Help

A Tamil Activist Wicki Wickiramasingham, who recently spoke with those 83 Asylum seekers in Nauru, said in an interview with ABC that, “two men who were interviewed yesterday, had no legal advice… Because they don't know they need them, they don't know they can get legal advice and they haven't requested and they have not given proper advice”. “None of the Tamil Lawyers in Australia are so far ready to freely help those asylum seekers nor any Eelam Tamil Organisations in Australia has taken any solid steps to mobilise resources to help them” said a community worker.

Five years have lapsed since the signing of the cease- fire agreement between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) formulated to find a solution to the ethnic problem through negotiations. But a conducive atmosphere is not ensured for the existence of Tamils without tortures and torments. The military atrocities on the Tamils have been intensified after Hon.Mahindarajapaksha assumed office as president. His government has ignored the peace talks and functions with the credence on a military solution.

We, Diaspora Tamils living in Switzerland, understand that His Holiness is scheduled to meet the President of Sri Lanka on the 20th instant. As we are well aware and firmly believe that His Holiness act as a vanguard of oppressed people around the world irrespective of religions, languages, etc., we would like to urge His Holiness to utilize this excellent opportunity to emancipate the Tamil people from the yoke of Sri Lankan government and save them from the state sponsored ethnic cleansing.

Tamil school run by Poonga Tamil Community Education in Auckland, New Zealand commemorated Tamil Patriots Day last Sunday 15th April 2007, sources said. Tamil School is run every Sunday morning and it consists of a Tamil preschool as well as a bridging school for older children who learn Tamil and English.
